Handrails are an important feature of an accessible ramp and they are required for ramps with a rise greater than 6 inches. The handrail requirements are found in Section According to Section , handrails are required on both sides of ramps.

A curb or barrier can be provided as well in lieu of extending the floor surface. If a curb is used to provide edge protection, it must be a minimum 4 inches in height.
If a barrier is used to provide edge protection, it must be construction such that it prevents the passage of a 4 inch diameter sphere within 4 inches of the floor.
