Dionysius, having lived in the 3rd century, probably had a reason to believe cherubim were the intermittent steps of this 8-level hierarchy of glory.
Luther sounds far from certain on the matter of the definition of Cherubim, and deferred to what he heard others say about Chaldaic terms. Well, Luther made a nice effort, but he was not right. Looking for meaning in Chaldaic words is misguided. Mainstream Christianity today seems to prefer to disassociate cherubim and seraphim, placing them into separate categories of angels.
They say seraphim have no face while cherubim have human faces, that they serve to inflame humans with the love of God per Jerome while cherubim serve as protectors. But until recently, seraphim were considered a class within cherubim. There are a bunch of Hebrew words where it is hard to tell what the original definition was—did the definition we popularly think of today apply when the scripture was written or did that definition get assumed afterwards because of the scripture story?
Perhaps seraphim likewise were not fiery until the brazen serpent story. The word tan is used in the Old Testament in the context of mourning and howling desert animals, which scholars assume are jackals. But how can anyone know when all we have is the bible to go by?
The same problem exists here. All we have is the context of how the word is used in the Old Testament to guess what it means. The most famous story with seraphim involves fiery snakes, therefore it is assumed they are bright or fiery angels. How does that make it descriptive of the brightness of the seraphim angel?
The most obvious explanation is that when the Old Testament speaks of serpents as if they are angels it actually means serpents being angels. We arrive at what Jewish and Christian theologists have been struggling to avoid: anthropomorphism. It is absolutely unacceptable for angels or any divine Christian creature to be portrayed as animals!
Well, in the Facsimiles of our Pearl of Great Price there are Figures which likely originally had jackal heads. Anti-Mormons rake Joseph Smith over the coals for drawing Anubis with a human head instead of a jackal head—and yet with Facsimile 3 there is evidence Joseph Smith originally had Anubis drawn with a jackal head , which means he was well aware that this Figure had an animal head and made the conscious decision to switch it to a human head in both Facsimiles. Perhaps it was to fit into the stringent mainstream Christian view that forbids anthropomorphism.
Egyptians and other ancient people were well aware that the jackal head was metaphorical. But today we have sci-fi TV shows that show Anubis literally walking around with a brass-coated jackal head. Skeptics would have shifted the narrative to complaints about the animals heads and the symbolism would have been lost.
Most dismiss the issue of what cherubim looked like by quoting Ezekiel which describes them with the heads of various animals. But what Ezekiel said was that one had the face of a cherub and the rest had faces of various animals. This means he must have known what a cherub was supposed to look like. Two Kinds Of Evil Serpents — Mainstream Christian scholars still allow for one case of anthropomorphism in the Bible—the serpent in the garden of Eden. That is hard to get around.
Perhaps that is why they are so loath to admit that seraphim angels are serpents—the devil was a serpent. The serpent is an evil symbol to them. The Book of Mormon repeatedly refers to Satan inside of the context of the garden of Eden as a serpent. Wherefore, he said unto Eve, yea, even that old serpent, who is the devil, who is the father of all lies, wherefore he said: Partake of the forbidden fruit. Michael and his angels win the war against the old serpent and cast him out of heaven.
This obviously refers to the pre-mortal war in heaven in which we chose our first estate and the sons of perdition fell, and it also refers to the Millennium when the sons of Michael will prevail against Satan and he will be bound for a thousand years. It goes back to the Egyptian solar rituals helping the sun return in the morning. Egyptian Apep was the same as the dragon, the lying serpent in the garden.
This great battle, fought in the Ritual during the last hours of the night, becomes a typical last great battle in a contention that is fought out on the scale of the great year of the Book of Revelation… The war in heaven, or in exernal nature, was first. Next it was made astronomical. In the Ritual the evil Apap is bound in chains each morning…. Apap is fallen and is in bonds. The same drama was represented yearly in relation to the annual sun and the autumn gathering of All Souls.
In Revelation the drama represents a larger period of time. A thousand years intervene betwixt the first and second resurrection…. These are the two types of the Egyptian devil. The Apap-reptile was that old serpent, the devil in pre-anthropomorphic guise.
Sut was the anthropomorphic Satan or evil adversary in the later theology. Also the dragon and Sut are treated as if identitical in the Ritual. In the chapter of chaining the evil one, this is the Apap in one aspect and Sut in the other. Then Sut is put into his prison. Two different labels but referring to the same guy—just different time periods or aspects of him.
I believe it is the same with cherubim and seraphim. Both refer to serpents but in slightly different roles, and in both cases they are foundational solar symbols. Considering this war of heaven is ongoing, does this mean cherubim are still ongoing warriors fighting this battle?
I believe so. Take a look at what the Book of Mormon says. It mentions cherubim twice, and in both cases in reference to the cherubim guarding the tree of life in the garden of Eden. Alma the Younger explained to Zeezrom that the cherubim are angels revealing to us the plan of salvation:. Now, if it had not been for the plan of redemption, which was laid from the foundation of the world, there could have been no resurrection of the dead; but there was a plan of redemption laid, which shall bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, of which has been spoken.
And now behold, if it were possible that our first parents could have gone forth and partaken of the tree of life they would have been forever miserable, having no preparatory state; and thus the plan of redemption would have been frustrated, and the word of God would have been void, taking none effect.
And they began from that time forth to call on his name; therefore God conversed with men, and made known unto them the plan of redemption, which had been prepared from the foundation of the world; and this he made known unto them according to their faith and repentance and their holy works. Wherefore, he gave commandments unto men, they having first transgressed the first commandments as to things which were temporal, and becoming as gods, knowing good from evil, placing themselves in a state to act, or being placed in a state to act according to their wills and pleasures, whether to do evil or to do good—.
Therefore God gave unto them commandments, after having made known unto them the plan of redemption, that they should not do evil, the penalty thereof being a second death, which was an everlasting death as to things pertaining unto righteousness….

Notice that there are two kinds of commandments. The first kind was to not eat the fruit of knowledge, and that commandment was broken and now we are all going to die physically. This kind of commandment correlates with the old serpent that threatens us physically, the dragon, and with the cherubim.
In response, God instituted a second kind of commandment, spiritual laws that result in spiritual death if broken, and this correlates with the other kind of old serpent which entices us to oppose righteousness, and the seraphim.
Jesus Christ delivers us from this second death to which we all succumb and are unable to pull ourselves out of. Cherubim As Chariot Of God — The thunder-cloud brought wind which ancient was considered the moving force pushing earthly things up to heaven.
